Whether their preferred Presidential candidate won or lost, you could see the relief in Rotarians’ faces as we gathered for our first post-election meeting: the seemingly endless campaigning was over! Somehow the return of beer ads and used car pitches on prime time TV denoted a comfortable return to normal.
New member Sherry Webber got things off to a brisk start by leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Guests: Joan Sumagaysay introduced her guest xxxxx Miller.
President Tom had the grand pleasure of inducting our newest member, Tina Woody. Tom indicated that Tina joins 1.2 million Rotarians around the world. Informed by the Rotary motto “Service Above Self”, all those Rotarians are working for a better world for all of us. After Tina’s sponsor Cheryl Feldman “pinned” her, Tina told us a bit about herself (Californian borne and bred, married, two kids, works as Activities Manager at Merrill Gardens Vallejo). Welcome Tina!
President Tom invited Mike Browne to introduce our speaker, his friend Elizabeth Hoffman, director of Rebuilding Together Solano County. Ms Hoffman’s dynamic presentation highlighted the work Rebuilding together does in our community: since 2009, they have organized more than 2000 volunteers to rebuild/upgrade 6 homes for poor or elderly citizens, and have done improvement work on 14 community facilities in our county. In Vallejo just this year, Rebuilding volunteers have upgraded the Veterans’ Building on Admiral Callaghan Lane, and did important indoor upgrades at the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum. Ms Hoffman emphasized her organization’s need for volunteer workers and financial support.
At the completion of the presentation, Mark Porter rose to challenge Rotarians to buy tickets to Rebuilding’s major fundraiser dinner on Friday, 30 November. Mark’s incentive: he would pay half the cost. Your correspondent notice Mark buttonholing Rotarians in the hallway after our meeting. I suspect our Club will have a pretty good turnout!
Announcements: President Tom announced that Assistant District Governor Ken Courville will speak on Rotary Foundation at our 14 November meeting. The 2013 District 5160 Conference will be in Chico, 18 – 20 October. A Club Assembly is scheduled for 5 December.
With that, President Tom closed our meeting right on time, at 6.15 pm.
