Our meeting room quickly filled to overflowing (I saw our hotel host and member Nader El Kabanny bringing in extra chairs…) as a very energetic group of Rotarians arrived for our post-Thanksgiving meeting. After President Tom chimed the meeting to order (the Big Bell really does get peoples’ attention!), Secretary Bryant Burleigh boldly led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. President Tom told Rotarians present that our meeting format was changed for this meeting: we would give our speaker 30 minutes instead of the usual 20, because her topic stood to benefit our Club as well as its members. See below!
Guests and Visiting Rotarians: Sam Thompson introduced his guest Sandra Wilhite. Gina Snyder introduced visiting Rotarian (Vallejo noon Club) Wendy Jones, known to us as Exeutive Director of the Continentals of Omega Boys and Girls Club, our Community Service project recipient for 2012-2013. Needing no introduction whatsoever was frequent visitor and friend of the Club, Past President (Vallejo noon Club) LaGuan Lea.
Special Events Chair Ed Stern described his Committee’s progress on our 19 December holiday special meeting / party. So far, 27 people have signed up. Ed says he hopes for 30. Ed mentioned that we might be asking people to bring so item of donation for the benefit of a community charity. President Elect Steve Davis told about his idea of setting up a table at a Vallejo store to solicit holiday donations for local charities. Steve’s already talked with Carol Larson about designing a Rotary-logoed table cover for this. Steve asked for volunteers to sit at the table, when it’s set up. I saw Polly McCall and Cheryl Feldman cornering him to volunteer. I’m sure there were more.
There followed an enthusiastic round of Happy Dollars as almost every Rotarian had a favored Thanksgiving story to tell.
Even with all these activities, President Tom brought up Past President Brian Kendall to introduce our speaker, his and Janet‘s daughter Tawnee. Tawnee is a product strategist for Google, and her topic was the Google social medium product Google +. In a very taught presentation, Tawnee educated us on Google + circles and other tools for communication among our members, and with a Club Google + page. Many questions followed.
President Tom announced that our scheduled Club Assembly had been postponed to 12 December. Program Committeemembers Gina Snyder and Carol Larson are scrambling to find a good speaker for 5 December, so any suggestions are welcome! Tom also mentioned that our Board of Directors meet at 4.30 on the first Monday of the month. All member are welcomed to attend.
Even after President Tom closed the meeting promptly at 6.15, members were plying Tawnee Kendall about Google + and other social media questions…
