The mood was festive as the Rotarians of Solano Sunset gathered after a “dark” day on 4 July.
Brand new club President Tom Snyder opened the meeting promptly at 5.30 with a firm double ring of the bell. Steve Davis chided him for this presidential gaffe: one ring should be enough!
With strong voice, Joan Sumagaysay led the Pledge of Allegiance whereupon Tom launched us into our fast-moving meeting. There was not time for Happy Dollars because we had the pleasure of inducting our first post-charter member, Mark Porter. With Mark’s sponsor Samuel Thompson standing by, Tom noted that Mark now joins more than 1.2 million Rotarians around the world who, by living the Rotary motto “Service Above Self” are working for a better, more peaceful world. Mark then told us about his multifacted career, and his passion for supporting local agencies of good work.
Program Chair Patrice Williams then introduced our speaker, Jim Libien. Jim is a lawyer who represents cities and other public entities in Workers’ Compensation proceedings. In a talk that neatly compacted about 15 hours of material into about 15 minutes, Jim gave us interesting insight into the Workers’ Compensation system. A brisk Q & A period followed.
In brief announcements, Special Events Chair Ed Stern encouraged Club members to register for our 25 July Charter Celebration. In his hurry to close the meeting exactly at 6.15, Tom unceremoniously cut Ed’s announcements short, and act for which, Tom will no doubt pay a price!
Next week, our speaker will be our own Samuel Thompson. Sam will educate us on insurance coverage, and to this end, he asked us all to bring in the Declarations page of our auto insurance policies.
